Cane Fly Rods
“My father was very sure about certain matters pertaining to the universe.
To him, all good things - trout as well as eternal salvation - come by grace and grace comes by
art and art does not come easy.” –Norman Maclean, A River Runs Through It
While most people see only the shine and sparkle of a finely crafted fly rod, we must remember
that it is first and foremost a tool. It must have the ability to accomplish the delivery of both
line and fly in the appropriate manner, maintain enough grit to land even the most rebellious fish
and it must do this with grace and a fluid balance in the hand.
The rods I make start as a piece of raw Tonkin cane. This cane is imported from China and
specifically sorted and sold for the rod making process. Each piece of cane is split,
worked by hand to flatten the nodes (rings of the cane) and straightened.
These straightened strips are then beveled, bound in cotton cord, and oven tempered.
From the oven they make their way into planing forms where they are carefully planed
into the tapered strips that will create each section of the rod. The tapered sections
are glued in a binder and dried. Once unwrapped, the sections are cleaned of excess glue,
sanded and polished. Ferrules are attached and fitted on a lathe. I then assemble your
desired handgrip, reel seat, guides and fine silk wraps. The wraps and rod get multiple
layers of dipped marine spar varnish. The rods are packaged in hand sewn rod bags and high
quality aluminum tubes.

"The first rod I bought from Buddy was on eBay and built on a Payne 102 taper.
It happened that I had to be in his area, and we arranged for a hand delivery.
Long story short, I have since had him build rods on Payne 100, 98, and 96 tapers,
as well as a 6 weight on his own taper. The rods look great and function beautifully.
I no longer use graphite, except in 8 weight and up. Needless to say, he has my highest recommendation."

Refinishing/Restoration Service
Refinishing and restoration services are available and would be quoted individually.
I define refinishing as taking a vintage rod and bringing it back to a fishable state using
modern or non-original components where necessary. Restoration requires the use of all
original or duplicated original components. Restoration can be a great deal more expensive
and time consuming than refinishing as vintage components can be scarce and costly.
To discuss a refinishing or restoration project, contact me. I’ll be glad
to talk to you about the project and if appropriate make arrangements to view the rod in question.
"Over the past several years I have sent many customers to Buddy for both refinish/repair
work as well as new builds. Everyone down to the last has come back proudly showing off his work.
I continue to be impressed with his craftsmanship and the beauty of his rods. I gladly recommend
Buddy's work to customers in my own fly shop. "
